RLT Hosts Native vs Invasive Plants Class
RLT hosted an educational workshop on the popular topic of native and invasive vegetation on June 8, 2024. A fine crew of gardeners and naturalists turned out to learn about native northeastern plants that favor indigenous pollinators and serve as host plants for butterflies. The class got an introduction to various unseemly invasive vegetation that threaten the quality of our open spaces and local ecology. Attendees learned how to identify mugwort, oriental bittersweet, multiflora rose, Japanese barberry, Himalayan raspberry, Japanese honeysuckle, garlic mustard, swallow-wort, and other culprits. During this hands-on session, participants discussed invasives control strategies and tried their hands at using special tools to extract undesirable plants and slice their roots.
