Property History
In October 2017, Mr. E. Otis Dyer, a local surveyor, land preservationist and historian, donated approximately 433 acres comprising a substantial portion of the Squannakonk Swamp to the RLT. Centrally located in eastern Rehoboth, this undeveloped area lies north of Old County Street and borders Maple Lane. This generous donation, named the “Roy Wheaton Horton Preserve,” ensures the preservation of an area of remarkable historic and geographic significance for the enjoyment of the Town’s residents and visitors.
The property occupies a glacial depression formed nearly 20,000 years ago. The swamp supplies critical aquifer recharge for our groundwater supply and provides beneficial habitat for a variety of plants, amphibians, birds and other wildlife.
The Roy Wheaton Horton Preserve is a property rich in cultural history and natural resources. To learn more about this property’s fascinating history, read the full article here.
